Proper Nutrition for Off-Road Motorcyclists
Riding an off-road motorcycle across rough mountain terrain is an exciting, adrenaline-filled adventure. You challenge both nature and yourself, testing the limits of your skills. Now, just because off-road motorcycling involves riding a motorised vehicle does not mean that nutrition is not much of a factor in the sport or activity. On the contrary, you need to have the right amount of nutrients so you can endure harsh conditions and massive physical punishment as the terrain batters you and your machine.
First, eat foods that are rich in proteins. You need to be strong to handle, manoeuvre, and control your fast, heavy machine. For optimal strength, you need to build up muscles, and proteins are the building blocks of muscles. Examples of good muscle-building food are meats, legumes, egg whites, and soya.
Next, because mountain biking is a gruelling activity, you need carbohydrates for energy and sustenance so you can have the energy to keep up during the trip or race. Carbohydrates are usually found in large quantities in pastas, breads, grains, cereals, and root vegetables. Dairy products such as low-fat milk and plain yoghurt also contain an optimum amount of this nutrient.
Before, after, and during your ride, you should drink lots of liquid. That is because when your body is dehydrated, you cannot perform at your best. You may even black out, causing you to fall down and injure yourself. Thus, drink plenty of fluids such as water or fruit juice. Specially formulated sports drinks are also good since they contain electrolytes that regulate nerve and muscle function, blood pressure, and PH levels. They also help your body repair damaged or strained tissues.
